🟩 Nembrini model the legendary Roland RE-501 for desktop and iOS - giveaway (win ANY Nembrini app for desktop or iOS! See below) and review
Nembrini Audio's NA-501 Chorus Echo is based on the RE-501, part of Roland's Space Echo series like the famed RE-201. I am not a huge fan of chorus, but I love the sound of this, perfect on guitar, for that dreamy 80’s-style chorus reminiscent of tracks like Walking on the Moon.
🟪 A Few Important Pointers / Bits of Info / Tips:
The Direct switch allows you to silence the dry signal if you want, so you only have the processed signal.
'Link' allows separate control of the Sound on Sound effect for each stereo channel. This is a new feature that was not available on the original hardware.
The preamp section has a 'Linear' option for a cleaner sound (the difference is night and day, if you want that Andy Summers sound you will definitely want Linear on. With Linear off, it sounds very different, very grungy). Note that the volume control is inactive in Linear mode.
The echo section offers six modes for different delay patterns. The info as to what the patterns are is not in the manual, but from what I can gather, they are as follows:
1: First tape head
2: Second head
3: Third head
4: Heads 1 and 2
5: Heads 2 and 3
6: Heads 1, 2 and 3
The Repeat / Single toggle allows you to toggle between a single sound-on-sound style repeat and a feedback echo. The intensity knob controls how many repeats there are when in Repeat mode. Moving the knob when the slider is toggled to Single does nothing.
Has an inbuilt Spring Reverb. I would be tempted to put this through something like Springs by AudioThing to try out some different Spring models with the delay and chorus.
🟪 Niggles:
1. I’m not mad about the design of the 3 buttons to toggle the chorus / echo / Sound-On-Sound on and off. To me, the way they look when they are on makes them look more like they are switched off.
2. Also, note that it has no oversampling settings.
3. The Sound-On-Sound in the version I tried only has a max length of 1 bar / 3 seconds. Apparently there is already an update out for desktop which raises that to a much more interesting 30 seconds, and that will also come very soon to the iOS version
4. I don’t find the touch responsiveness brilliant on some of the switches etc in the iOS version. For example, I sometimes have to hit the direct switch numerous times before I get it to respond. Could do with some work in that area, that’s a real bugbear for me.
5. Wish the UI could resize to take up the full screen - you can resize, but you just have a lot of black space around the plugin. This is, of course, common with desktop ports, but it is unfortunate, regardless.
Overall, though, I LOVE the sound, and it is a very different sound from the RE-201. Note that I have no experience with the hardware, so am only judging this on its own merits.
