EQUIPMENT USED FOR ILLEGAL MINING CONFISCATED – IN DAWN PARK AREA
On Tuesday 30 July 2024 at 12h00, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Community Liaison (CLU) and Intervention Unit Officers, seized equipment used for illegal mining in Dawn Park area, by the Mapleton suburb.
Members of the CLU received an intel from a reliable source, about unauthorized mineworkers (zama-zamas), suspected to be in possession of gold processing machinery, at a certain plot situated in Mapleton.
EMPD Officers acted swiftly and the said address was raided, and as the four (4) male occupants saw Law Enforcers closing in on them, they bolted on foot and ran in different directions.
Inside the yard, Officers uncovered twelve (12) gold processing apparatuses (Phendukas), an electric generator, electric pipes, a few 25-liter buckets and other mining equipment’s.
All the confiscated mining kit, were taken to the Dawn Park police station.
The uncovered suspicious items, were booked under the SAP 13 file and no arrests were effected yet.
