A little fun fact: At that time the whole of Harris had a population of 4,750 people: today the population of Harris is about 2000. Leverhulme’s grandiose plan was that the population of Leverburgh alone would number 10,000 people.

It was in this village in August 1919 that a decision was taken at a meeting of local people to change the name from Obbe to Leverburgh...
