There’s This Woman I Usually Buy Food From Around Wuse 2.

Yesterday, I Found Out Why She Never Smiles.🥹

Everybody in that area fears her. They think she's mean. Let me not lie, at some point, I also thought she was a mean bitter woman too.😭

If you delay payment, she’ll embarrass you publicly. If you ask for extra meat or sauce, she’ll look at you like you committed a crime.

So people simply buy food quietly and leave.
After all, her food is quite affordable compared to other expensive restaurants around here. How much be person salary wey I wan dey chop food from Otega everyday? 😂

Yesterday evening after work, the rain started suddenly. So, I waited inside her shop.

That was when one small boy ran inside shouting, “Mummy! Mummy!!”

The woman immediately changed.

Like, she changed completely.

She was smiling and laughing. Something I've never seen before.
Cleaning his face with her scarf.

I was so shocked to my bones. 😭

Then the boy innocently asked, "Mummy, did daddy call today?”

The woman froze immediately and lost her voice.

That one question changed the atmosphere instantly.

Later on, a woman nearby whispered to me that her husband abandoned her and their son three years ago after she used her savings to sponsor him abroad.

Since then she has been training that child alone.

That’s when I realized something, sometimes the “wicked” people we meet are just tired people carrying pain nobody can see. 🥹

I Sent Our House Help Away Last Week.
Now I Can’t Sleep Properly. 🥹

You see, when people talk about things like this, I usually wonder how possible it was until I experienced it.

When Esther first came to our house, she was just 16.
I even almost fought with my mum saying that she’s too young to be a maid. She should be in school instead.

My mum found her through one woman in church after Esther said she wanted to work so she could continue school.

At first, I didn’t even like her.

Because every time I entered the kitchen, she’d stand up immediately like I was one madam. 😂

I kept telling her to “Relax nau…😩”

She was too quiet. Maybe timid too. 🤷‍♀️

She was always apologizing and saying “thank you” even for the smallest things which I found it annoying.
I figured it was a self esteem issue so I helped her work on her confidence.

With time, she became part of us and I gradually started loving her.

She knew how I liked my tea and always reminded my dad to take his drugs.

She even slept beside my little cousin anytime NEPA took light because the child was scared of darkness. Such a sweet girl! 🥲

One day, I came back from work and met Esther crying.

I asked her what happened and she said somebody stole ₦200k from my mum’s wardrobe. Aaah! How? From where! 😱

My mum was shouting. My aunty had already concluded it was Esther.

The painful part?
Nobody even asked her own side.

My aunty kept saying “All these village girls are the same.”

I seriously defended her with everything in me because this was a girl I was already grooming to be a star. 💔

But later that night, my mum called me quietly and said: “The money was found inside Esther’s bag.”

Omo.
My heart broke instantly. 💔🤦🏽‍♀️

The next morning, Esther was sent away. She kept looking at me with eyes that says “give me a chance to prove myself, please…”
I couldn’t even look her in the eyes.

She didn’t argue. Neither did she cry or beg.

She just carried her ‘Ghana Must Go’ bag and said something I still think about till today:

“Aunty… I didn’t take it.”
I was thorn between asking her to stay back until we investigate the issue well but the money was found in her bag!

Three days later, my cousin confessed out of fear and guilt.

She stole the money.

She said she was scared to admit it after everybody already blamed Esther. So she could as well just take the blame.

I hurriedly called Esther’s mum to beg her but she wasn’t picking my calls. 💔

Since then, I haven’t stopped thinking about one thing.

How many innocent people are suffering because nobody waited to hear their own side first? 🥺
