LaVilla’s Jacksonville Terminal was a bustling area in the 1940’s, welcoming 40,000 trains and 10 million passengers at its peak. As one of the busiest passenger rail stations in the South, it helped make LaVilla a hot spot where people were consistently coming and going, expanding the neighborhood’s reach and influence. During this time, LaVilla’s Black community thrived and grew, shaping the creativity and culture that defined the neighborhood.
Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing Park continues that legacy today, celebrating Black artistry and community, while honoring LaVilla as a hub where ev’rybody is welcome to gather.

Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing Park was created as a space where people could come together and feel connected to LaVilla’s history. In 2025, we saw that purpose grow through our weekly gatherings, from movement and wellness classes to dancing, markets, family events, and the special moments that brought new faces into the park. Each activation added its own spark, helping this place feel alive throughout the year. Thank you to everyone who showed up and all of our activators who spent their time, energy, and expertise making each event so special for our community!
Here is to ev’ry voice that helped carry LaVilla’s story forward this year. The community makes this park what it is, and we cannot wait to continue that work in 2026.
J. Rosamond Johnson played an important role in the growth of Black musical theater, appearing in major productions such as Porgy and Bess as Lawyer Frazier and taking part in Cabin in the Sky, a Broadway musical created for an all-Black cast. Productions like these were rare opportunities for Black performers at the time and offered space for Black stories and voices to be seen on some of the country’s biggest stages.
Johnson’s work helped show what was possible for Black artists in theater, creating space for others to rise in their own ways. Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing Park honors that legacy in LaVilla and continues it by making space for local artists to share their work with the community.

In 1929 the Ritz Theatre opened right in LaVilla and quickly became one of the neighborhood’s most important spaces. LaVilla is known for its music and creativity, and the Ritz is a huge part of that story. It is often listed as one of the historic venues on the Chitlin’ Circuit, a network of performance spaces that welcomed Black artists during a time when opportunities were limited in many other places. As part of the Circuit, the Ritz became a place where local talent and touring acts could be seen and supported.
Today, Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing Park continues that spirit. The park offers room for music and art to grow in LaVilla alongside the Ritz, inviting people to reconnect with the artistry and talent that have always shaped this community.
LaVilla in Lights is a community celebration inspired by the people who make LaVilla what it is. The evening honors the history and heart of the neighborhood while spotlighting the activators and partners who’ve helped build community at LEVS.
