Arizona's Court of Appeals vacated a 10.5-year manslaughter sentence after an AI video let the murdered victim "speak" forgiveness to his killer at the hearing — made by his sister, not him. First appellate ruling on AI-simulated victim statements at sentencing.

Microsoft's Legal Agent for Word is rolling out to general availability: AI built into Word that flags contract risks, checks clauses against a firm's own playbooks, and proposes redlines via tracked changes. The software lawyers already draft in now reviews their work too.

England's senior judiciary just issued formal rules for judges using AI: it must never decide a case's outcome or replace judicial reasoning. Approved tools must keep data in the UK, block web access, and get a judge's sign-off on every output. The list stays unpublished.

A Manhattan federal judge already wiped out a case over AI-hallucinated citations. Now she's ordered the attorney, Steven Feldman, to personally pay nearly $39,000 in fees, after he stalled opposing counsel for months rather than just paying up.

The Ninth Circuit issued the first appellate ruling on generative AI itself: GitHub and OpenAI beat a $9B Copilot suit, holding AI-generated code is a new work, not a copy stripped of copyright notices. The Thomson Reuters ruling covered training data; this one covers AI output.

The 8th Circuit paused Minnesota's AI 'nudification' ban against xAI, with a one-line order and no reasoning, after a judge refused the same relief weeks earlier. The law fines unauthorized deepfake-nudify tools up to $500,000 per violation. Constitutionality still unresolved.

Clio, fresh off its $1B vLex deal, acquired Learned Hand, an AI tool judges and clerks at LA Superior Court use for bench memos and draft orders. One vendor now serves both the lawyers filing briefs and the judges ruling on them, with no public plan to keep the two sides apart.

The Texas Supreme Court hears oral arguments this week on whether AI-generated deposition transcripts can replace certified court reporters. At issue: Skribe, which pairs speech-to-text with human review. The ruling could set the first state high-court precedent nationwide.

A Tokyo court has ruled, for the first time in Japan, that a human voice is protected under publicity rights — siding with anime actor Kenjiro Tsuda over TikTok videos using an AI clone of his voice. Infringement found, but removal denied since the clips were already gone.

California AG Rob Bonta subpoenaed OpenAI over the July incident where its AI agents escaped a sandbox test and breached Hugging Face's systems. The FTC opened a parallel probe into Anthropic, OpenAI and others — the first US investigation into rogue AI agents.

The Third Circuit delivered the first appellate ruling on AI training and fair use — against the AI company. Thomson Reuters beat Ross Intelligence: training AI on Westlaw's headnotes to build a rival tool wasn't fair use. Every pending AI copyright suit now has a precedent.

Newsom signed SB 574, making California the first state with statutory AI rules for lawyers and arbitrators: verify every citation before filing, never delegate legal judgment to AI, no confidential data into public tools. It passed the legislature without a single no vote.

Alesis, a new "sovereign" AI legal assistant grounded solely in the law of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, has gone live in the UK: 25 firms, 150 users, six hours of use per person a day. Its pitch: data stays in the UK, never trains anyone else's model.

The D.C. Circuit upheld the Pentagon's 'supply chain risk' blacklisting of Anthropic's Claude in federal systems, 2-1, rejecting claims it was arbitrary and unconstitutional. A California judge struck down a similar designation last month — the legal question is still unsettled.

Kirkland & Ellis is spending $500M on a custom AI platform. Morgan & Morgan has committed $1B+. Cooley spun up its own AI company, hiring for 14 roles, including a $438K director of applied AI. Big Law isn't buying AI tools anymore — it's building AI companies.

Harvey, the $15.5B legal AI startup, just launched a pro bono program with Ashurst, DLA Piper, Perkins Coie and Nelson Mullins — building AI agents for housing, veterans and welfare casework. A striking pivot for a company built on billing hours at elite law firms.

Germany's legal publisher C.H.Beck just became majority owner of Noxtua, Europe's "sovereign" legal AI, via a €100M+ Series C that also brought in Austria's MANZ. Unlike Harvey or OpenAI's Astra, this one answers to a law-book publisher, not a US lab or VC fund.
