Just as smartphones make gadgets like calculators, GPS devices, cameras, and recorders obsolete, ChatGPT and open-source LLMs are set to make specialized and long tail SaaS obsolete

Before ChatGPT, I juggled three different apps to track my food macros, micronutrients, and FODMAP contents as a health health conscious and FODMAP intolerant individual, it took 20 mins of Google and manual entries. Now, I can get detailed charts above with just a few photo snaps and a single prompt in 20 sec

What’s next? The future lies in local compute and personalized model finetuning. Imagine a new version of IFTTT with local LLM commands interfacing with other apps: a true machine-to-machine communication with a digital prefrontal cortex onboard. ie. I want to train my GPT to generate savory low FODMAP recipes, source ingredients from grocery apps, and order them automatically within a specific macro budget. This future is closer than we think—perhaps it's already here.

There are two potential futures:

Optimistic Version: This future is built on edge computing, local training, confidential computation, proof of inference, streamlined smart contracts, real data sovereignty, and fair economic attribution. AI could become our extended brain without compromising privacy or stifling long-tail but niche creativity.

Dystopian Version: As depicted in "White Christmas" from Black Mirror, this future sees our extended brains as another form of slavery, driven by ingrained greed and hyper-technologism. Either you subject yourself to the digital salary, trading convenience and efficiency, or you contract other "lower class" individuals with less access to tech advancement (like what OpenAI did in Africa, and what China & UAE did in banning all the LLM tools)

The optimistic future is where everyone participates to grow the overall pie based on comparative advantages. The dystopian future is where 10x engineers become 100x, and the rich get exponentially richer cognitively, physically, and economically.

We are witnessing the confluence of several trends:

- Binary codes becoming monetary codes
- Machine programs becoming social contract programs
- Human language becoming programming language

This convergence heralds a new era. The choice we face is clear: do we leverage this technology to democratize access and empower individuals, or do we allow it to deepen divides and entrench inequalities?

By embracing the principles of decentralization, transparency, and collective ownership, we can steer towards a future where technology serves as a force for greater collective goods, enhancing human potential while preserving our fundamental rights and freedoms
