@TrilbeeReviews I think she could be who the 2nd Doctor would have regenerated into if the Time Lords hadn't captured him in War Games and forced his regeneration.

Not an alternative universe, more a changed timeline, but she's still around because she's involved in fixed points etc.

Sounds more like she was contracted for a year, and that's come to end. Was also reluctant to return, so perhaps she's asked for the character to be killed off (so people stop asking her to return)!

She's been back for a year, so probably more the contract is coming to end.

Could even be she asked character to be killed off, as she's been reluctant to return in past.
