#ThroughHerEyes
I'm off on the holliers at last. Thank you to everyone who has engaged with this account and sent me fascinating stories about under-the-radar women. I am so touched by your interest.
When I get back in mid-August, it will be all about the untold stories of Irish women - and men - who joined the Resistance during WWll.
Here is one of them, Anna ‘Jeannie’ Duchêne, née Hodges, from Waterford. She was 71 when she sheltered two Scottish soldiers in her home at Ixelles, a municipality in south-east Brussels.
‘I couldn’t let the Germans take those boys again, so I said they could hide with us. We had a bed but no mattress, so [my daughter] Florrie and I ripped open our sofa pillows and made them a mattress so the poor lads would sleep easier,’ she recalled.
Both of them would later pay dearly for that brave gesture.
The Irish in the Resistance (with @Maoilmordha) out on 29 August.
