My experience obviously was not like his - Cuban police were by and large understanding when I made a mistake and since I had a proper visa I was able to explain what I was doing and be fine. This likely boils down less to “authoritarianism” and more to stupidity on Nick’s part

We declared the equipment we expected to bring and even then there are areas you can’t film (funny enough the U.S. embassy is one as my buddies and I learned while outside of it). My assumption is that Nick thought he could arrive and just record and that’s not how it works.
