After 7 failed attempts, the Senate has officially advanced the Iran War Powers Resolution in a 50–47 vote. The measure would require congressional approval for continued U.S. military strikes on Iran. That means the cracks are finally starting to show. Even members of Trump’s own party are beginning to realize you cannot bypass Congress indefinitely while dragging the country deeper into another Middle East war. The Constitution gave Congress the power to declare war for a reason. Because presidents surrounded by loyalists, television cameras, and wartime adrenaline are historically terrible at knowing where the exit is.

This resolution is a disgrace, and its adoption, whether under US pressure or otherwise, would seriously undermine peace and international law.
First, the resolution is fundamentally unbalanced. Its preambular paragraphs selectively “deplore” and “condemn” Iran’s actions, portraying Iran as the primary source of regional instability, while offering no acknowledgment of the broader context: prior aggression, the heavy U.S. military presence, escalation, threats, and maximalist demands that helped create the current crisis. By framing the issue as Iran versus the world, the draft precludes any serious diplomatic engagement.
Second, the text accuses Iran of breaching the ceasefire while cynically omitting any reference to the U.S.-imposed maritime blockade — itself a gross violation of the ceasefire and international law — or to Israel’s ongoing attacks in Lebanon, which also violate the ceasefire.
It deceitfully presents U.S. and Israeli war aims as “humanitarian” concerns or matters of freedom of navigation, while making no mention of the savage U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iranian civilian infrastructure, hospitals, and pharmaceutical manufacturers. These attacks constitute blatant war crimes and represent the real humanitarian catastrophe.
Third, the operative paragraphs impose sweeping, immediate, and one-sided demands on Iran with no reciprocity. They require Iran to immediately cease all attacks and threats, disclose and remove sea mines, and enable a humanitarian corridor. At the same time, the text ignores the presence of U.S. warships, submarines, and logistical vessels supporting American bases that have freely transited the Strait, directly threatening Iran’s security and vital interests.
It also prohibits any Member State from assisting Iran in “closing the Strait or levying tolls,” disregarding their sovereignty and right to enter into bilateral agreements with Iran. Meanwhile, paragraph 6 “reaffirms the right of Member States… to defend their vessels” - language that can readily be interpreted as a green light for military confrontation - thereby closing off any path to incremental de-escalation.
Fourth, the resolution undermines the very principles it claims to uphold. It “reaffirms” navigational rights under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, yet effectively demands that one littoral state unilaterally abandon its defensive posture in its own waters. At the same time, it makes no reference to the U.S. militarization of the opposite side of the Persian Gulf, which has turned the Strait into an extension of a military zone and stripped it of the neutrality expected of international waterways.
Fifth, while claiming to serve the interests of the global economy, the resolution in fact seeks to perpetuate the crisis. It warns of a return to the Security Council “to consider effective measures… including sanctions measures” in case of non-compliance, ignoring the reality that further sanctions or the mere threat of military enforcement would actually drive energy and food prices even higher worldwide.
Far from advancing peace, endorsement of this resolution would hand Donald Trump a sweeping propaganda victory. It would allow him to claim that the international community has retroactively legitimised an unlawful war and would embolden him to escalate with even greater recklessness. The co-sponsorship by certain Arab states is particularly shameless. These governments have hosted U.S. military bases on their territory and materially facilitated the aggression. They have neither the legal nor the moral standing to table a text that purports to defend the core principles of the United Nations Charter, including state sovereignty, the prohibition on the use of force, and the peaceful settlement of disputes.

Every time a diplomatic solution is on the table, the U.S. opts for a reckless military adventure. Is it a crude pressure tactic? Or the result of a spoiler once again duping POTUS into another quagmire?
Whatever the causes, outcome is the same: Iranians never bow to pressure.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson’s Remarks on the U.S. Ramping up Sanctions Against Cuba
Q: The U.S. president signed an executive order on May 1 to expand sanctions against Cuba, accusing Cuba of continuing to constitute a threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States. On the same day, the Cuban foreign minister said that the U.S.’s illegal and unilateral coercive measures are reprehensible and ridiculous, and that “they will not intimidate us.” What is China’s comment?
A: The U.S. intensification of illicit and unilateral sanctions against Cuba gravely infringes on the Cuban people’s right to subsistence and development and violates the basic norms in international relations. China firmly supports Cuba in safeguarding its national sovereignty and security, and opposes interference in Cuba’s internal affairs. We urge the U.S. to stop at once the blockade and sanctions as well as coercion and pressuring of any form against Cuba.
