A new Assessment and Recovery Centres (ARCs) pilot, backed by NHS Blood and Transplant and supported by the British Liver Trust, has the potential to enable up to 200 additional liver transplants annually by improving the assessment, preservation, and future recovery of donated organs.
Using machine perfusion technology, organs that may previously have been declined can now be kept functioning for longer, giving clinicians critical time to evaluate viability and expand transplant opportunities.
At a time when transplant waiting lists are at record highs, this represents a significant step forward in:
✔ Increasing organ utilisation
✔ Reducing waiting list mortality
✔ Improving equity of access
✔ Harnessing innovation to save lives
Behind every transplant is a person waiting, a family holding on to hope, and a future that could be changed forever. This pilot is potentially a vital step towards increasing the number of transplants performed every year.

For the first time ever, liver disease has been formally recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a global non-communicable disease priority. The decision places liver health firmly on the global health agenda and calls on governments to improve prevention, early diagnosis and access to treatment.
This landmark decision is a major step forward for everyone affected by liver disease. We have long campaigned for greater recognition of liver disease, so we're delighted to see this important breakthrough. It sends a clear message that liver health can no longer be overlooked.
