If your patriotism rises and falls based on who’s in the White House, maybe your allegiance is to politics—not the country.
The flag represents the nation and its people, not whichever administration happens to be in power.

Wave the flag and celebrate that today, or two days ago, 250 years ago the continental congress got together and voted and said "Enough!"
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness."
Franklin called it 11 years later, responding to Elizabeth Wiling Powel, "A republic, if you can keep it."
And here we are, 250 years after the Declaration. The American Experiment is still running.
Yes we've had our moments, the times when everything ran smoothly. Equally we've had challenging times where the failures of government have hurt the people or left us wanting more.
You can love the country and hate the president, the congress, the whole of it all. You can believe in the principles of this grand experiment and celebrate the fact that our young country has outlasted and succeeded where many others have failed.
In 1858, then candidate Lincoln declared "a house divided against itself cannot stand" and foreshadowed the destruction of our Civil War. And after the war ended, Lincoln first and Grant after worked to bring the country together. To restore the house, using Lincoln's words. And our country came together.
The divide today is ugly - arguably worse than during the Civil War. It's a sad state. But, arguably, it's a state we've brought on ourselves. And a state which is encouraged by the very people who are supposed to represent us. Because if you're mad about (any issue), you'll give more money and resources to (any candidate) if they say the words to make you believe they stand with you.
250th anniversaries don't happen often. Let's get out and wave the flag, drink some beer, watch fireworks, and celebrate the freedom we have that all started with a group of men and a letter titled In Congress July 4, 1776, A Declaration by the representatives of the United States of America.

Tomorrow we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia unanimously adopting the Declaration of Independence. The official beginning of our now long-standing tradition of telling Brits to F off.
