All the Europeans in my replies accusing the United States of being an unreliable ally need to look in the mirror. Aside from the Eastern Front NATO members, Europe and Canada have been abysmal allies to the United States. We have failed to meet the minimum 2% of GDP for defense spending, we all ran out of munitions after bombing Libya for a week in 2011 and many of us actively undermined the alliance and our security by enriching Russia by buying their energy. Germany in particular bears extraordinary moral culpability for continuing to push Nordstream 2 even after it was obvious that Russia would invade Ukraine.

These actions are far more damaging to the alliance than Trump's anti-NATO rhetoric. In fact, they have enabled it, as many in North America said it would. Europeans were warned that if they did not meet their NATO commitments, the American public would become more skeptical of NATO. Europeans ignored those warnings, and look what happened.

So a little self reflection is warranted. Accusing the US of being unreliable is beyond the pot calling the kettle black. NATO is the most powerful, most successful alliance in human history, but that only continues if everyone pulls their weight. If Finland, the Baltics, Poland and Romania can do it, then the wealthiest countries in Europe certainly can.

I will also emphasize again that those Eastern Front members, who are at the most risk from Russian aggression, are the largest purchasers of US weapons. They understand that the best way to keep the US committed to Europe is the Foreign Military Sales program.

They also understand that buying US weapons is not in conflict with building up Europe's defense industry. The US is willing to co-produce equipment and munitions with allies. This is a proven model that is both economically viable and enhances NATO interoperability.

It is in the interest of both the US and Europe for the European defense industrial base to have greater capacity, particularly for munitions production. It is in the interest of nobody for vast sums of money to be spent on developing boutique, indigenous systems which will be procured in very small numbers (the French model). The French believe it works for them but it won't work for anyone else in Europe.

The GMARS is a prime example of what US-European defense cooperation should look like. Whatever the French might develop to replace the LRU is a case study in what the rest of Europe should not do.
