@RutgersAltRoute A5. I plan to ramp up my efforts to curtail the use of the word “fag,” which is thrown around with reckless abandon by many of my male students. They don’t even realize that they have close friends who are gay. #AltRtEd#standuptobullying
@RutgersAltRoute A4. It’s impossible for students to learn if they don’t feel safe or equal. As a history teacher, I use discussions on bullying to remind students how discrimination based on gender, race, and identity also robbed past groups of an education. #AltRtEd#standuptobullying
@RutgersAltRoute A3. My PLC shares developing situations or students who appear withdrawn. Fortunately, I haven't had to contact any parents over a HIB situation, but my colleagues will call parents at the earliest signs rather than waiting for the harassment to grow. #AltRtEd#standuptobullying
@RutgersAltRoute Q2. Stamp out verbal harassment early. Homophobic and sexist language are thrown out commonly by students in the hallways, but I never allow it to enter the classroom, and if it does, they have to spend time with me after school. #AltRtEd#standuptobullying
@RutgersAltRoute A1. I preach the golden rule to my students: "treat others as you want to be treated." It is written in the course syllabus and posted throughout my classroom. Respecting others is a requirement for my students. #AltRtEd#standuptobullying
@RutgersAltRoute Tim Gigl, High School Social Studies Teacher, Academy for Urban Leadership Charter School, Perth Amboy, NJ. Formerly the resident historian for the Whydah Pirate Museum in Cape Cod, MA. #AltRtEd#standuptobullying
@RutgersAltRoute A5. I communicate frequently via email and invite parents to join in Google Classroom so they can follow along. I would like to post more learning resources for parents and ignite their desire to learn as many have education deficits themselves. #AltRtEd#EdTech
@RutgersAltRoute A4. As for benefits, technology exponentially increases the resources available to teachers, allowing us to target different learning intelligences more easily. As for challenges, stopping plagiarism and sharing of assessments has also become more difficult. #AltRtEd#EdTech
@RutgersAltRoute A3. My Professional Learning Community uses Google Chat and Google Meets (especially during distance learning) to share ideas, provide resources, and check in with each other. By using technology, I always feel like I have support from my colleagues. #AltRtEd#EdTech
@RutgersAltRoute A2. Teaching at a school where many students come from low-income families, not all of my students have convenient access to computers or the internet. Likewise, my school has limited resources as well, so I’m still looking for strategies to bridge that gap. #AltRtEd#EdTech
@RutgersAltRoute A1. I assigned my students several research project options, one of which was to design a Civil War museum. Being a Minecraft player (my daughter introduced me) a number of my students built a museum in minecraft, then gave me a historical tour! #AltRtEd#EdTech
@RutgersAltRoute A6 - As stated in the video, it's important to "know your students." Discipline practices don't work the same for all students and this is especially true of students will disabilities. Teachers should be fair, but flexible. Find out what works for individuals. #AltRtEd#SpEd
@RutgersAltRoute A5 - I like that Mr. Weinberger refers to helping ADHD students as "channeling" or "redirecting" their energy. The fidget box seems likes a good idea—the seat cushion in particular. I had never seen that before. #AltRtEd#SpEd
@Dianna71166340@RutgersAltRoute A4 - I give students with ADHD the opportunity to walk around the room, to work w/ a partner, to chat with me in private—anything to help redirect their energy. I also give them opportunities to meet with me before and after school when there are less distractions. #AltRtEd#SpEd
@RutgersAltRoute A3 - In an ideal environment, students with ADHD and other disabilities should be given tools, technologies, and other resources that help offset hindrances. Even something as simple as a stress ball or a rubik's cube can help students focus. #AltRtEd#SpEd
@RutgersAltRoute A2 - Students with disabilities should not be reduced or defined by their disability. Like all students, they have particular strengths and talents and they should be reminded of those and encouraged to pursue them. #AltRtEd#SpEd
@RutgersAltRoute A1 - One of the biggest challenges that my colleagues and I face at our particular school is a lack of resources. We don't have much in way of additional learning materials, support staff, & resources, which makes creating an inclusive environment difficult. #AltRtEd#SpEd
