Jeremy Clarkson has strongly criticised the sentences handed to three teenage boys convicted of raping two girls in Hampshire, arguing the punishment was far too lenient and questioning the judge’s decision to spare them immediate custody.
Writing in his newspaper column, Clarkson said the outcome “beggars belief” and accused the court of failing to reflect the seriousness of the offences. He argued that those convicted of rape should face much tougher penalties and expressed support for the decision to have the sentences reviewed by the Court of Appeal.
The case, heard at Southampton Crown Court, involved the rape of two teenage girls in separate incidents, with footage of the attacks later shared online. During sentencing, the judge said he had to consider the defendants’ ages, personal circumstances and prospects for rehabilitation, noting that peer pressure had played a role in the offending.
Clarkson rejected those arguments, saying the offenders should be held fully accountable for their actions. His comments have added to the wider public debate surrounding the case, which has attracted significant criticism and is now set to be reconsidered by the Court of Appeal.
