Through late 2010s it was impossible to find a prominent figure on center-left with normal values who didn’t also hold one socially destructive belief, e.g. “i am a respectable economist who believes in open borders,” “i am a father of two who believes in abolition of prisons.”

“I am a founder at a tech company who thinks all drugs should legalized” and so on. Today it is very clear where such policies would lead, but at the time it seemed one couldn’t be part of polite society without at least one “socially sacrificial” belief like that.
