Dear All - the outrage in past few days over #wintrackinc viral post and subsequent stories being shared by others, is doing tremendous disservice to a key critical arm of our National Security. Here is my 2 bits on it #Thread #Customs

@cbic_india plays a very critical role balancing economic and frontier security along with ‘ease of doing business’ in India.

A. Having worked closely in this domain, for the past 15 years - across all major stations in India, i can safely say that the Compliant Trade has seen much better days in the past 10+ years than they have had earlier.

B. We need to separate issues, and accordingly address each of them appropriately:

1. Arrival related challenges - the Superintendents Posted at International Arrival
2. Postal / Courier Shipments
3. Sea & Land Customs

C. It is also well known in our country - that for every law made, 10 deviations are found in the first hour.
Likewise - for every genuine business operator, there are those out to game the system.

Whether it is undervaluation, drugs, spurious goods, and other such commodities - which threaten to flood our markets.

D. Knowledge of prevailing Customs Laws and Procedures is of utmost importance. CBIC and Icegate have among the best public information platforms, along with HS Code wise Compliance Requirements shared publicly in Advance.

E. Engaging the right Logistics Support Partner and Customs Broker is of equally utmost importance. We have seen so many organizations take short-cuts in this domain and try to engage fly-by night operators or agents whose only focus is cutting costs - and NOT Compliance. Half the issues occur due to bad or wrong advice.

F. Grievance Redressal Mechanism - Today every Customs Station, the senior officers including the Chief Commissioner - are available for grievance redressal. The Industry Bodies, including Trade Associations like @FFFAI_INDIA @BCBA_IND and others at each station are working closely with entire Customs Formation and remain ready to support all forms of trade.

Let me reiterate this very clearly, with proper basic knowledge and information of the import / export commodities - the processes have become largely simplified and predictable.

G. Does this mean there are no issues? Of Course not.
Involvement of allied agencies, ministries and departments is causing teething issues - aspects like SIMS, PIMS, Food Safety, Drug Controller are ever changing and one has to be updated with the latest in each avenue.

And engaging with both department and trade bodies is extremely important to convey the issues, and seek coordinated approach towards redressal.

Being with our Customs Brokers Association at local and National Level - we have seen significant change, realtime impact and positive success stories aplenty. We also see the faults in the system - which we work actively towards addressing.

Indian Customs has moved rapidly in the past decade or so, and is on the path of further rapid growth. Let us collectively collaborate, engage and join minds towards resolving the issues which arise and aim for better days ahead.
