Yesterday I spent six hours trying to write about Deborah Samuel.

I couldn't finish.

Deborah was 19. A Home Economics student at Shehu Shagari College in Nigeria.
May 12th, 2022.

Her classmates were discussing upcoming exams in their WhatsApp group.
Someone posted about Prophet Muhammad helping them pass.

Deborah responded: "Holy Ghost fire. Nothing concerns Jesus with exam success."

Within hours, she was dead.

The mob formed fast. Students she knew. People she studied with.
They dragged her from the security office where she'd hidden.

Beat her with sticks.
Stoned her.
Set her on fire.

All on video.

I've watched the footage. I wish I hadn't.
A 19-year-old girl screaming for mercy.
Her classmates throwing rocks at her burning body.

Her crime? Defending Jesus in a group chat.

Think about that. A WhatsApp message.
The same platform where we send memes and make dinner plans.

She typed a defense of Christ and died for it.

While we calculate whether posting Scripture might hurt my engagement,
she paid with her life for typing "Holy Ghost fire."

While we debate adding cross emojis to our bios,
she burned alive for three sentences.

Her family had to flee their home immediately.
Death threats. Arson attempts.
Her father lost his job.

The ripple effects of one WhatsApp message defending Jesus.

Nigerian authorities arrested two suspects.
Then released them.
"Lack of evidence."

They had video footage.
Hundreds of witnesses.
The mob celebrated on social media.

Still not enough evidence, apparently.

This is Chapter 23 of "Blood and Bandwidth."

Deborah Samuel. 19 years old.
Burned alive for a WhatsApp message.
2022. Not 1522.

Along with 46 other modern martyrs whose stories
most Christians will never hear.

Because we're too busy managing our comfort
to acknowledge what faith costs elsewhere.

Her last words, caught on video:
"What do you hope to achieve with this?"

While burning, she was still trying to reason.
Still hoping for humanity.
Still believing people could choose differently.

That's faith under actual fire.

I'm not writing this to shame anyone.
I'm writing it because Deborah's courage deserves witness.

Her death deserves more than trending for 48 hours.
More than thoughts and prayers.
More than digital amnesia.
