Undying Gamer

Through the Dark Portal.

World of Warcraft, old favorites, and whatever comes next.

[Undying Gamer @Loidrin]

At its peak, World of Warcraft had more than 12 million people paying every month to live in the same world. By 2014, over 100 million accounts had been created. In 7 days it comes back as WoW: Forever.

Retail turned into a second job. Weekly vault, a rating to keep up, and the fear that skipping a week leaves you behind. You queue from a city, run the dungeon with four strangers, and they leave without a word.

WoW was a game you played because you liked being there, whenever you had a free evening. A stranger helped you with an elite quest in Stranglethorn, and a week later you were in his guild. You spent Friday nights together wiping in Molten Core with 39 people you had never met, and some of them became real friends, the kind you later met in person. Whole servers spent months hauling copper bars and bandages to Ironforge and Orgrimmar so the Gates of Ahn'Qiraj would open. Guilds stormed Orgrimmar to kill Thrall and Stormwind to kill Bolvar, and half the server dropped what they were doing to defend their city.

It was more than just a game.
It was an entire world, populated with real people playing in it.

That's the game I want back on November 4.

Things I'm about to type again for the first time since 2006:

"LF1M healer then we go"
"any lock up for a summon?"
"need or greed?"
"brb, dinner"

[Undying Gamer @Loidrin]

WoW: Forever drops November 4th.

That's about to be the sickest day in American history.

[Undying Gamer @Loidrin]

@KomradDakka @TheQuestBroski @Warcraft That’s a problem for future me 🧟‍♂️

[Undying Gamer @Loidrin]

every vanilla WoW player did this at least once

> yelled LEEROY JENKINS and pulled the whole room
> saved for the level 40 mount and still came up short
> got ganked in Stranglethorn by a 60 rogue who then sat on you
> hit 60, typed ding and got 30 grats from the guild

six days

[Undying Gamer @Loidrin]

@GigabearForever Why stop there?

Just let everyone swap classes mid-combat.

[Undying Gamer @Loidrin]

@AggrendWoW @GigabearForever You’ve somehow caught lightning in a bottle twice.

PLEASE don’t fuck this up.

Those of us who were there 20 years ago are rooting for you harder than you can imagine.

[Undying Gamer @Loidrin]

@GigabearForever Horde, EU, PVE.

Beyond the dark portal, my friend

[Undying Gamer @Loidrin]

@Joe_The_Demon @Warcraft I like your name

[Undying Gamer @Loidrin]

@Psybear_tv So be it

[Undying Gamer @Loidrin]

BlizzCon 2013. A fan asks Blizzard for vanilla servers.
"You think you do, but you don't."

September 2026. The WoW: Forever beta opens and a Blizzard dev calls it "the craziest numbers I've seen in 17 years working at Blizzard."

We did.

[Undying Gamer @Loidrin]

@IGN Elden Ring got pushed back a month too, from January to February 2022. Nobody remembers the wait now. I'd rather FromSoftware hold it than ship it half done and patch it for a year.

[Undying Gamer @Loidrin]

A WoW: Forever world builder spent a year relearning how they built Azeroth 20 years ago.

He says it's for "the millions of people who have had their accounts lapse over the years."

That's me. My Undead comes back from the dead. Again.

Six days. Hearthstone's off cooldown.

[Undying Gamer @Loidrin]

@Wario64 Respect to Nintendo. Forty years of Zelda and they still make it for the kid holding the controller. It's complete on day one and worth every hour you put into it.

[Undying Gamer @Loidrin]

Epic just confirmed it's using AI to write code for Unreal Engine 6 and Fortnite. Their engine lead said they worry more about moving too slowly than about AI skepticism.

A lot of people will be angry about this. I'm not.

Stardew Valley was one guy working alone for years. Give that guy tools that do the boring parts and we get ten of him. The next game you can't put down is coming from a bedroom, and Epic just made the bedroom a lot bigger.

@IGN

BioShock got all of us to obey with three words: would you kindly.

The next BioShock:
- announced in 2019
- story reportedly sent back by 2K in 2025
- a third of the studio laid off
- seven years later, still no title and no trailer

Would you kindly finish the game.

[Undying Gamer @Loidrin]

@Fezzybeard Retail was made for gays and women. You’re clearly its target audience, so why the fuck are you complaining?

By Fezzy’s logic, every MMO is the same game if you ignore enough of it.

Different leveling, combat, progression, class design, social systems. Apparently all irrelevant because you can just choose not to participate.

Fucking hell. Even Blizzard understands the distinction, and that’s saying something.

[Fezzy @Fezzybeard]

Perfect example of what's wrong with wowtwt. Retail WoW can be played in every way people want to play Forever. "Retail is a job" complaints are from people who FORCE themselves to clear all weekly content, skipping what doesn't give a power boost. They'll do the same in Forever.

[Undying Gamer @Loidrin]

@IGN Good sign. Hope they use the extra time to stay faithful to what they promised and not mess it up.

[Undying Gamer @Loidrin]

@Pirat_Nation 431k on Steam on launch day. Every Western exec who said single-player action games don't sell anymore should have to sit and watch that counter.
