In the Black American community, we have this saying: “Take care of home before you worry about what’s going on in the streets.” And, from my perspective, this is what the OP is referring to.

Sure, you can go out into the world giving advice, helping everybody, and trying to “do good,” but if your own foundation is unstable, your responsibilities are getting neglected, or your home base is just a mess, then at some point your outward generosity becomes self-sabotage.
