If the Fed were truly independent, they'd raise interest rates until it forces **Congress** to cut spending. Then pay down the principal and retire debt.

@RBReich We could simply default..... as a means of cutting the interest expense.

Default is a rational option to prevent the Political Class from promising things We The People are unable or unwilling to pay for.

Or, we gut Social Security, Medicare / Medicaid... and the Dept of War.

@DA_Stockman I'm surprised that the Federal Reserve can keep rates low. Interest rates are supposed to counter the irrational exuberance of the market. How high would rates need to be to compel *Congress* to cut spending? 10%? 20%? At a certain point, the $1.5 trillion F-35 is too expensive.

@RandPaul Convince the other 434 members of Congress to end the statist agenda of our Govt. Cut $2 trillion of spending.... close 100 foreign military bases. Kill the F-35 and B-21 stealth bomber programs. And then freeze the money supply...
