Something I've learned while in law school is about the social construction of crime. I work in a legal clinic on wage theft cases, where employers have "improperly paid" workers by not paying, paying below min wage, withholding overtime, paid sick time, etc. 1/
@dima_strakovsky I think you're making the assumption that "free market" is the individual and socialism is the state. In practice, both are instantiations of ideologies that are only possible through state intervention. No policy or governance framework is free of ideological substructure.
@dima_strakovsky extent that explicit support for separate but equal is now a far-right position. But the underlying policy of racial segregation was always illiberal. I'm just saying that OW doesn't really apply to anything I wrote.
@dima_strakovsky Policies are laws that governments enforces well political speech support for or against specific policies. The OW applies to the latter, not to the former. Separate but equal was a centrist compromise & the underlying policies it defends are liberal. The OW has shifted to the
@dima_strakovsky I'm thinking of public policy, specifically. While the Overton window has shifted to the point that it's impolite to praise redlining & racially segregated neighborhoods & school districts, speech is not illiberal. In this example, the public policy is illiberal not speech.
imagine being an 8-year-old boy trying to watch a family christmas movie and your dad pauses it to go on a schizo rant about the Great Replacement Theory
As a Mayan woman, my “build” is tied to my culture’s diet. Taught from an early age, nixtamal is made by boiling + grinding maize that was soaked in a calcium-rich alkaline mixture for tortillas/tamales (supports thicker bone mass, unlike Maseca). Don’t be xenophobic 😇 also, not having osteoporosis is awesome! 💪🏽
The meritocracy is a belief that socioeconomic status is earned, and therefore deserved. In capitalism, a person says, "I'm rich. I deserve a dacha." In Communism, a person says, "I'm a party leader. I don't deserve a dacha. But I don't NOT deserve a dacha."
It’s almost like we’ve spent 30+ years mass importing the third world, and now the nation is starting to resemble the third world…
There is no magic soil.
A nation is simply it’s people.
Sometimes I deeply crave American Chinese food. However, this is nearly impossible to find in Berkeley, California, whose restaurant scene is entirely composed of hand pulled noodles from Lanzhou and Xi’an. Oh, the horrors
My dog brought a DEAD POSSUM into the kitchen. Obviously, this was traumatic. My mom and I freaked out for 20 minutes while my dad hunted for a shovel. When he finally scooted the possum onto it, the possum opened one eye, looked around, and closed it again. He was PLAYING DEAD. My dad carried him outside and set him on the ground. The possum kept up the act for another 10 minutes. Then he got up and walked away totally fine. But look at that picture. The tiny clenched paw. Mouth open mid scream, tongue out. Très dramatique 10/10 performance
@dima_strakovsky Fisherking isn't that deep. He's a petulant White supremacist weirdo. He's not unlike the people who bully this kid. Essentialist Ideological conditioning about Identity & phenotype were brought to the "New World" not invented here, as this post illustrates.
Thomas Aquinas talked about limiting full citizenship to immigrants by a few generations. The US and Europe show the wisdom of this.
You really shouldn’t be able to throw your weight around in one generation. It’s just rude. But you fully assimilate - your grandkids can run for office.
