LITTLE FALLS POWER OUTAGE

Some residents of Little Falls, Roodepoort, have now been without electricity since Thursday, 12 February, with the outage continuing into Sunday, 15 February, and still no meaningful progress communicated despite repeated engagements with City Power and local political representatives.

This area has experienced recurring electricity failures over time, pointing to deeper infrastructure and response challenges that remain unresolved.

When power outages occur, they are increasingly frequent and take far longer than expected to resolve.

The consequences for residents are severe.

Families have spent days without hot water — a basic marker of dignified housing. Many households have lost thousands of rands’ worth of food due to prolonged refrigeration failure.

Residents who rely on electrically powered medical equipment and temperature-sensitive medication face serious health risks as a result of the prolonged outage.

People are being forced to consider alternatives such as gas cooking in complexes where this is restricted by building rules, simply to meet basic daily needs.

Residents report that communication from City Power leadership, including General Manager Sibusiso Xulu, has become limited, while local representatives have not provided clear timelines or solutions.

This lack of responsiveness is deepening frustration and uncertainty in the community.

Conflicting information from City structures — including premature confirmation that the issue had been resolved — has further undermined trust. Municipal leadership has remained largely silent as the outage continues.

Residents will gather today at 14:00 (for 14:30) to collectively call for urgent intervention, transparent communication, and a sustainable solution to the recurring outages affecting Little Falls.

Reliable electricity is not a luxury; it is an essential public service tied to health, safety, and dignity.
