But I worry Burnham is too focused on the past; in almost every speech, he talks about what should have happened under Thatcher in the 1980s.

This would be like Blair railing against Macmillan, or me blaming Jim Callaghan for the challenges of the 2020s.

The emphasis on the past is even more concerning given that Burnham has abolished the government department most focused on the future.

Changing leadership alone cannot alter the nation's fortunes 🇬🇧. It is through policy reforms that this becomes possible. The focus should be on how to retain and attract wealth creators, and how to make it worthwhile for them to take risks for the country. Inheritance tax is a tax paid both during a person's lifetime and after their death. It cannot be fair to penalise those who wish to leave something for their families, giving them a head start in life and easing the burden on the State. @MelJStride

I welcome action to cut the cost of energy which is too high because of Ed Miliband’s policies.

But the question is how will Burnham fund all his new policies without putting up taxes or borrowing even more.

Until yesterday, Darren Jones was in charge of DigitalID and the Chief Secretary to the PM. So if he tells people the DigitalID programme was unfunded, he will know what he’s talking about. It’s only one day into Burnham’s Government and already the explanations are falling apart. You can’t use the funding from an unfunded programme to pay for cheaper bills.

Conservatives have set out our fully funded Cheap Power Plan that will cut family energy bills by £200, including by cutting their VAT. We are paying for that by getting Britain drilling and scrapping Net Zero policies. John Healey should take a look at it and steal our ideas.

The country is built by entrepreneurs and risk-takers. If they face punitive taxation, they will leave rather than invest in the economy.

I wish Andy Burnham every success as Prime Minister. But it is my job to hold him to account.

Every announcement he makes should be properly funded. We cannot borrow more money and the tax burden is already too high, so the only answer is spending cuts.

I will work with him in the national interest to find savings from the benefits bill. If we reach agreement, my Conservative MPs will vote for those cuts in Parliament. That's the way to get Britain working.

At his 3rd try, Andy Burnham has become Prime Minister. Third time lucky for him but I fear unlucky for the rest of us especially after he reminisced about the 1970s in his speech yesterday! The decade that gave us the 3 day week, the IMF bail out, the winter of discontent & when the top marginal tax rate was 98%.
No wonder he talked about hope in your heart, you’ll need it to survive a re run of 1970s- for you certainly won’t have a ‘pound in your pocket.’
