Warrior Women of History #10: Grace O’Malley, the Pirate Queen of Ireland 🏴‍☠️

In the 1500s, while England tried to conquer Ireland, one woman ruled the western seas with a fleet of ships and hundreds of men.

Legend says she gave birth at sea, and the very next day her ship was attacked by pirates. She stormed onto the deck and drove them off.

When an English governor captured her son and her brother, she sailed straight to London to meet Queen Elizabeth I face to face.

Two queens, one room. It’s said she refused to bow, because she didn’t recognize Elizabeth as Queen of Ireland.

She sailed home with her family freed.

Warrior Women of History #9: Lozen

🏹Her brother, the Apache chief Victorio, called her his right hand: “strong as a man, braver than most, and cunning in strategy.

”Lozen rode and fought beside the Chiricahua Apache warriors for years. She was also said to have a sacred gift: standing with her arms raised, she could sense which direction the enemy was coming from

.She guided women and children to safety through enemy territory, then rode back to the fight. She rode with Geronimo until the very end, and died a prisoner of war in 1889, far from her homeland

.Her name is often translated as “dexterous horse thief.” 🐎 #history #WarriorWomen #AIart

On this day in 1929: Black Tuesday. 📉

The stock market crashed so hard that about 16 million shares were dumped in a single day, a record that stood for almost 40 years.

And the famous stories of bankers jumping from windows? Mostly a myth, spread by comedians and newspapers. Historians found very few cases.

On this day in 1886, the Statue of Liberty was unveiled. 🗽

But she didn’t look like she does today. She was shiny copper-brown, and it took about 30 years of weather to turn her green.

She also worked as an actual lighthouse for 16 years.

One of her bronze axes weighs about 9 kg (20 lbs). 😳 Whoever swung that was no ceremonial queen.

Warrior Women of History #8: Fu Hao ⚔️

3,200 years ago in ancient China, she was a queen. She was also the most feared general of her time.

Ancient oracle bones record her leading an army of 13,000 soldiers, one of the largest of the era. She was a high priestess too, leading sacred ceremonies that only kings were supposed to perform.

For 3,000 years, she was nearly forgotten.

Then in 1976, archaeologists found her tomb, completely untouched. Inside were more than 1,500 treasures: bronzes, jade, and the giant battle axes she carried into war.

She didn’t just marry a king. She fought for one.

On this day in 1904, New York opened its first subway. 🚇

The ride cost 5 cents, and more than 100,000 people rode it the first night.

The mayor was only supposed to start the first train. He liked it so much he refused to give up the controls and drove it himself.
