To pay your tax he must sell. His basis is near zero, so after federal and California capital gains he must dump roughly $17 billion in stock to net your $10.5 billion. Now multiply by 200 billionaires liquidating at once to raise the full $100 billion.

Who takes the markdown when they all sell in the same window? The owners of the other 86% of Meta. CalPERS. CalSTRS. Every index fund, teacher's pension, and 401(k) in the country.

And it is a one-time tax funding permanent spending. California's own analyst projects the state loses income tax revenue every year afterward as the billionaires leave. Eat the seed corn once, then explain the famine.

This is what concrete-bound means. You see a number on a list and mistake it for money in a room. You cannot think ten seconds past the confiscation.

We are living through a massive information crisis in which at least half the population is being systematically misinformed, making any sane national debate increasingly difficult. Without a shared factual foundation, there is nothing to discuss. People are not merely drawing different conclusions from the same evidence. They are living in entirely different realities.

That is what makes the Fauci story so tragic. He caused untold harm, yet millions of people know almost nothing about it. We can debate precisely how large a role Fauci played in the creation of Covid, but half the country does not even know that Covid came from a lab. We are therefore several steps removed from the basic conditions required to have an intelligent discussion.

Other facts are even more black and white. Fauci’s private diary contradicts what he told the public. His own words reveal a man of almost limitless narcissism. These are not matters of interpretation. They are documented facts. Yet we still cannot have a national conversation about them because the media either refuses to report them or actively lies about them. Anyone who is not on Twitter, which is most people, may never encounter the underlying evidence at all.

The result is that I increasingly find it almost impossible to discuss any of this with ordinary people, whether family members, acquaintances, or people at events or birthday parties. Unless someone has followed the evidence closely, there is no common starting point. Before you can debate what happened, you first have to dismantle at least ten years of falsehoods and omissions.

I do not know how this ends, but it is not sustainable. A country cannot function indefinitely when its people are no longer capable of discussing almost anything beyond sports on the basis of shared factual knowledge.

The problem is that Texas got beat by 25 at UGA, lost to a talented but poor Florida team, needed a miracle comeback at Miss St and went to OT at UK. They never looked as good on turf as they did on paper.

I will rail against ranking teams by the loss column until the cows come home, but Texas never really showed elite form. They aren’t the best team to champion that cause

The most stunningly successful thing about the American experiment is that in the late 1700s, the thirteen colonies were hardly valuable at all.

They had no known great natural resources, they were far from a jewel in the crown of the British Empire.

The British were far more desperate to keep the profitable sugar islands than the thirteen colonies. That’s why upon the entry of the French to the war, peace was sought soon - and the priority was to keep the profitable Caribbean and control of the seas.

In seeking peace, Britain was thinking with its treasury not its heart. War is expensive. And while losing the thirteen colonies was embarrassing, it was not the kind of hit to the British economy that losing other colonies would have represented.

In stark contrast to the relatively barren North America, the Spanish Empire in South America had vast obvious natural resources. Spain extracted gold. But it never built anything to last.

The United States of America proved what far too many countries are yet to understand today.

The wealth of a nation is not in its natural resources. It is not fixed. The world is not zero sum.

America became the wealthiest country on the face of the planet, not thanks to its soil - but thanks to the men who stood on it.

The institutions they built - the English liberties they codified - created the basis for a stable, prosperous, market economy. Freedom under law.

It’s thanks to the systems of government the founders built that the United States became what it is today.

Were any other group of people - with any other ideas about how a society should be structured - to settle that land, America would be like any other country today.

But it isn’t. And that’s thanks to the enlightened ideas of its founding.
