@NigoraFazliddin This is a great example of one of the differences between how Russian VS. how English is taught these days. Russian teachers try to help their students "sound Russian" and assume that all Russian users want to communicate with ethnic Russians and engage with Russian culture.
@Feztickle75@joshualdwchong@TorontoStar This summer's Craft Beer Festival was actually cancelled due to lack of venue. It's tough for everyone. Higher costs for event organisers+ cost-conscious attendees careful with how they spend their money. No one is getting out of this easy.
@Duschanofff @niginakhon_@jowiiu I agree, it read more to me like he's signalling that, given his own meagre background, he's aware he can't expect a bride who both comes from money and is considered conventionally desirable in other ways.
@niginakhon_ Obviously there is a dimension of misogyny in this conversation as well, and it's clear that the man envisions his future bride as a means to an end more than a life partner. And that really sucks. But is it wrong for him to not want to struggle?
@niginakhon_ Considering the inflation in Uzbekistan and the cultural expectation that a man marry young, have lots of kids, and be the sole provider for his ever-growing family, I think it's quite understandable that a young man might want to marry into money to ease the burden.
@niginakhon_ Especially in the past year, I feel like I see daily posts on social media about families being evicted from their homes because landlords are demanding higher and higher rent and wages have stayed nearly the same.
@catamarancommie@MikeHilliardAus Many gen alpha in Uzbekistan do not know Russian. They speak Uzbek at home and go to Uzbek-language schools. Far fewer Russian speakers than the previous generation.
@MikeHilliardAus A large and growing number of private universities in Uzbekistan use English as a medium of instruction (EMI), making English study very desirable for secondary students. Considering the limited number of spots in public unis, this is a door few can afford to close.
A great discussion at my presentation at #niletesol2023 . Online Learning and Foreign Language Anxiety. Really insightful observations and insights from the attendees. @ AUC The American University in Cairo https://t.co/zbmOSezLpt
