The funniest thing about the 2010 Ballon d'Or debate is how some people use it to attack Messi while pretending 2013 never happened.

The argument goes like this:

"How can Messi win the Ballon d'Or after scoring 0 goals at the World Cup, not winning the Champions League and not winning a treble? Sneijder won the treble, reached the World Cup final and should have won."

Fair enough.

Now let's apply that exact same logic to 2013.

Cristiano Ronaldo won the Ballon d'Or despite winning no major trophy.

No Champions League.
No La Liga.
No international trophy.

Meanwhile, Ribéry won the treble with Bayern Munich and was one of the key players in one of the greatest club seasons in football history.

So which is it?

If Sneijder deserved 2010 because trophies and team success matter most, then Ribéry deserved 2013 for exactly the same reason.

If Ronaldo deserved 2013 because individual brilliance matters more than trophies, then Messi deserved 2010 for exactly the same reason.

You cannot spend 15 years screaming "Sneijder was robbed" and then suddenly develop amnesia when Ribéry's name comes up.

The reality is that Ballon d'Or criteria has never been as simple as goals, trophies or international tournaments. Every era has had subjective voting, different priorities and different interpretations of what "best player" means.

What exposes the bias isn't defending Sneijder.

It's defending Sneijder while refusing to apply the same standard to Ribéry.

Some fans don't want consistency.

They want a rulebook for Messi and a different rulebook for Ronaldo.

And that's exactly why these debates never end.
