Farwell's team is challenging the necklace over chain of custody: the cousin found it on the floor, and accounts conflict over whether it passed through the family's civil attorney or went straight to MSP.
Here's why it fails.
The FBI affidavit (Doc 9-1, ¶80) documents the necklace in the crime scene photos: chain broken — not at the clasp — hanging off the left side of her neck, the flamingo charm on her abdomen, all while the strap was still around her neck. Those photos were taken before the family ever touched it. No handoff confusion can retroactively edit a photograph.
Second: nobody disputes what the item is. The reporting describes the same broken metal, the same clump of her hair tangled in it. Chain-of-custody attacks authentication — "is this really the item?" — and that argument dies when everyone agrees on the item.
Third: it's independently authenticated three ways. Her own phone photos show her wearing it (affidavit fn. 16). Family members identified it as hers. And Dr. Smock — 40+ years, police surgeon and FBI medical advisor — found the break pattern consistent with a struggle, not with being unclasped.
And the law: gaps in the chain of custody go to weight, not admissibility (1st Cir., U.S. v. Gonzalez-Ramirez). The judge admits it; the jury decides what the handling confusion means. The motion loses — the mess just becomes cross-examination fodder.
The photos are the receipt. 🥦

How to get away with a botched investigation 101:
Starve the Medical Examiner of facts, so your deliberate police omissions quietly become the official medical record.
In the John O’Keefe case, Dr. Irini Scordi-Bello ruled the manner of death as "undetermined." Why?
Because the Massachusetts State Police treated the forensic context like a customizable menu.
Lead Investigator Michael Proctor provided her with a highly curated, tunnel-vision narrative of a motor vehicle strike, meticulously filtering out anything that threatened the homeowner's innocence.
Here is what Proctor conveniently "forgot" to mention to the ME:
🔻 The Motive: The entire Brian Higgins, Karen Read, and O’Keefe romantic triangle, complete with text messages and escalating animosity.
🔻 The Dog: The 80-pound German Shepherd living at 34 Fairview. Because the ME wasn't told about Chloe, obvious canine teeth and claw marks were officially logged as "unexplained abrasions."
🔻 The Fight: Any possibility of a physical altercation inside the Albert home.
Because Dr. Scordi-Bello was explicitly told to look for a pedestrian strike, she examined O’Keefe’s legs. She found zero evidence of a bumper impact—a glaring forensic anomaly for a car crash—yet MSP stuck to their phantom car theory anyway.
Medical Examiners rely entirely on police for situational context to determine if a death is a homicide. When what gets left out becomes the medical record, the autopsy itself is rigged.
Considering that Proctor was later fired for his staggering, documented misconduct, his foundational report to the OCME is completely compromised. It belongs in the fiction aisle, not a courtroom.
This isn't just one rogue Trooper; it's the standard operating procedure for Norfolk County.
Let's be accurate about the history here: Proctor wasn't the investigator on the Sandra Birchmore case, but his boss, Lt. Brian Tully, supervised both fiascos.
Add in investigators like Fanning on the Birchmore side, and you see the exact same institutional playbook: prematurely rule out homicide, ignore the crime scene, and starve the ME of context until you force the forensic outcome you want.
When corrupt cops write the prologue, the medical examiner can never finish the book.

Some people turn to astrology to explain their personality. I observe the Ontario justice system.
I was born on the exact day the Crown handed Karla Homolka her infamous plea deal.
While I was taking my first breath, the state was busy signing the most catastrophic, manipulated legal contract in Canadian history.
By the time they found the tapes proving she was the architect of her sister's death, the ink was dry.
It’s no wonder I grew up to build forensic archives and dismantle true crime narratives for fun.
I learned on Day One that courts do not negotiate the truth. They negotiate risk. 🥦

Another case where new information has emerged. This year, Douglas Barry was identified as a person of interest, with multiple witnesses mentioning him. Police firmly believe Brian encountered foul play that night. 🔍

One of the kids in the classroom has also recently spoken out.
I’ll be honest, I’ve thought that the theory suggesting he died in the woods requires too many leaps.
Happy to see this case gaining attention lately. https://t.co/VqX1GKDmVl
