ISIS have officially claimed responsibility for an attack by Islamic State Mozambique (ISM) insurgents on a hunting lodge in Niassa province. Between 11 and 20 people, including a South African national, were reported missing after the attack. "Islamic State fighters burned a valuable tourist site belonging to the Christians and a Mozambican police station in two attacks in Niassa province in northern Mozambique.
Security sources told the Amaq Agency that Islamic State fighters attacked, last Thursday, a tourist site belonging to the Christians near the village of Marangira and took control of it.
The sources added that the fighters burned the site together with the equipment and vehicles inside it, and also seized two four-wheel-drive vehicles.
The sources disclosed that another attack took place on the same day against the Mozambican police station inside the village itself.
The sources explained that the fighters clashed with police personnel, which resulted in the wounding of one member and the burning of the station after they fled.
The sources also reported that the fighters burned a government building, a church belonging to the Christians, and the house of a sorcerer along with two vehicles belonging to him, before departing for their bases safely.
The sources noted that the attack comes within the ongoing war being waged by the Islamic State against the Christians of Mozambique, their government and their economy.
It is recalled that two similar attacks took place in (April) of last year on the tourist sites of Kambako and Mariri inside the well-known Niassa reserve, leaving 8 dead and major destruction and material and economic losses."
