I do not understand people who say "you are an ANC beneficiary" as though it were an accusation.
I am. Say it plainly and I will not flinch from it. I am the child of a domestic worker who supplemented her wages with a child support grant and sent us to a no-fee school where I could eat something even on the mornings there was nothing at home. I went on to a good South African university on an admissions and financial aid policy that financed my place in it outright. Millions of South Africans carry a version of that same story. It is not a special case. It is closer to the ordinary one.

Here is why the accusation never lands the way it is meant to. Social security in this country is not a floor that sits beneath all our politics, guaranteed regardless of who happens to be governing. It is one party’s policy, sustained because that party has chosen, so far, to sustain it, precisely because other parties treat exactly this kind of spending (on grants, on education, on health, on the basic safety net under a household) as a drain on the fiscus rather than as one of the state’s most basic functions.

A party that cannot recognise the state’s role in that most fundamental piece of development is not a party I can trust with deciding where this country goes next.

Any party that believes the state should retreat from that ground is not, to me, a neutral economic position. It is a threat to a right that is meant to be universal, because where access is supposed to be equal for everyone, the state is the only actor with the size and the duty to make it actually equal. A state that withdraws from that role is not becoming efficient. It is abandoning the part of the population with nowhere else to turn.

You have to have been a beneficiary of these rights to feel this properly, I think, because without them some of us would simply never have had an opportunity in this country at all. Not a smaller opportunity. None.
