Justice B. V. Nagarathna on the Bar’s Duty to Democracy

Justice B. V. Nagarathna of the Supreme Court of India has delivered a powerful reminder: the legal profession cannot remain merely an occupation—it is a public trust.

Addressing the 13th Convocation of National Law University Delhi, Justice Nagarathna urged Bar Councils—Central and State—to introspect on their responsibility to uphold professional ethics, morality and competence. She warned that when a Bar Council fails to earn the respect of its own members, it is a serious concern for the legal profession.

Her message goes far beyond lawyers.

India's justice system faces pendency, delays, rising costs and uncertainty. In such circumstances, she called upon the Bar to speak with a united voice and work towards strengthening justice delivery.

Most importantly, she reminded lawyers that they are torchbearers of constitutional values and that their conduct has a profound impact on India's political and civic life. Their duty is not simply to win cases or earn fees, but to serve distressed litigants, uphold the rule of law and help sustain democracy.

That is the heart of Justice Nagarathna's message: professional independence carries responsibility. Constitutional democracy requires lawyers who can advise, argue, challenge and represent without fear or external pressure.

At a time when institutional independence and constitutional accountability matter deeply, these words deserve serious public attention.

A strong Bar is not one that merely protects its profession.
A strong Bar protects justice, constitutional values and democracy.

When hatred becomes politics, the people who cheered it on eventually discover that the fire has no permanent boundaries.

The creator’s message is a sharp warning against communal hatred: for years, Muslims and other minorities have been targeted through exclusion, intimidation, violence, religious tests and polarising rhetoric. The speaker argues that ordinary people are being made to fight each other while questions of governance, infrastructure, jobs, development and the use of public resources receive far less attention.

The real test of patriotism is not how loudly we hate another community. It is whether we can love the country without dehumanising its citizens.

A democracy cannot remain healthy when citizens are encouraged to see one another as enemies. Today’s political target can become tomorrow’s discarded supporter.

India needs citizens who question power—not communities who are taught to hate each other.

Teach your children to reject prejudice—not people.

Don’t teach them to divide the world by fair and dark skin, caste, religion, wealth or status.

Teach boys to respect every woman and girl, in every form and every circumstance.

Teach girls not that beauty is their greatest virtue, but that knowledge, humanity, character, courage and independent thought are.

Teach every child the confidence and skills to protect themselves—and, equally, the responsibility to respect the boundaries and dignity of others.

Because education is not merely about producing successful individuals.

It is about deciding what kind of society the next generation will inherit—and create.

A generation where a person's worth isn't measured by caste, colour, religion, gender or money.

A generation where strength does not mean domination, and equality does not mean sameness.

A generation where no child grows up believing that another human being is inherently inferior.

And perhaps the most important lesson of all:

Human beings should not be taught to fear one another. They should be taught to understand, respect and stand with one another.

If we want a future without hatred, we cannot simply demand it from adults.

We have to teach it to children.

Raise children with knowledge.
Raise them with courage.
Raise them with equality.
Raise them with empathy.
Raise them to see the human being before the label.

Let the next generation inherit less hatred—and leave behind more humanity.

लेकिन लंबा वक्त बीतने के बाद भी केस वापस नहीं हुए।

इसके बाद अभिजीत दीपके ने 5 सितंबर को एक बार फिर विरोध प्रदर्शन करने का ऐलान किया था,

जिसके नतीजे में आज केंद्र सरकार ने उन सभी बच्चों के ऊपर दर्ज केस को वापस ले लिया है।

अंततः एक बात फिर युवाओं की जीत हुई।

Hope the other BJP/NDA states will file the same application by tonight. Positive development is expected on the compensation for families of the dead NEET victims too. I, @whattalawyer, and other members of the CJP will be in the Supreme Court tomorrow when the matter will be taken up in an urgent hearing.

We continue to stand by all young persons and every student. We will never let them be alone when it comes to facing the brunt of the state. Our efforts have led to issuing of notifications by all NDA/BJP states, where we have worked on the exact language to be used.

The government delegation also flew down to Pondicherry to meet me in the last three days to talk and give progress reports.

We will ensure there is no vishwasghaat with the youth and the families of the dead NEET victims.
