London accounts for 57% of all temporary housing in England — and with benefit rates frozen since 2011, boroughs now face a £740 million funding gap for temporary accommodation.

🚨New report 🚨

Research conducted by @lse_london has found that eight London boroughs spent a combined £543m on temporary accommodation in 2024/25. However, the amount national government reimburses councils’ temporary accommodation spend has been frozen for 14 years.

The research shows:
🏠 There is an estimated £740m temporary accommodation shortfall across London
🏠 The equivalent of 11% of the average household’s council tax bill is now spent on temporary accommodation
🏠 Boroughs are spending £5.5m a day on homelessness

London Councils is calling for immediate reforms to the system and the unfreezing of the temporary accommodation subsidy to prevent further borough financial collapse.
