The Hanging Temple (Xuankong Si) is a breathtaking 1,500-year-old monastery clinging to a cliff face in Shanxi Province, China . It's famous for its gravity-defying architecture, its unique fusion of three religions, and its precarious location.

🏛️ A Masterpiece of "Suspension"

Built into the cliff of Mount Hengshan, the temple sits over 60 meters (200 feet) above the valley floor . Its support system relies on oak crossbeams driven into holes cut deep into the bedrock, with the main support structure hidden inside the mountain itself . A few wooden pillars at the front are mostly for show, adding to the visual drama . In 2010, Time magazine named it one of the world's ten most precarious buildings .
