#OTD in 1947, the behemoth Hughes H-4 Hercules "Spruce Goose" flying boat made its one and only flight. One of the chase boats was a surplus WWII motor torpedo boat that Hughes later sold to Universal Studios where it was used as PT-73 in the opening credits of McHALES’S NAVY.

Between June 11 and October 30, 1944, U.S. carrier-based fighters destroyed 2,472 enemy aircraft while losing only 123 planes - an astonishing ratio of 20 to 1. The Navy was then able to greatly reduce orders for more fighters and still maintain full air strength.
