These five teams make up the exclusive list of NBA champions who have successfully fought back from being down 0-2 in the Finals.
In most of these series, one key schematic adjustment flipped the script and left the early leader unable to overcome and win again. Can the Spurs join this exclusive list by finding and being bold enough to make that type of adjustment this late in the season? Only they know.
Here is exactly how each of those historic comebacks unfolded:
🏆 1969 Boston Celtics: The Celtics dropped the first two games on the road against the Los Angeles Lakers. They battled back to force a Game 7, ultimately winning the series 4-3 by upsetting the Lakers on their home floor.
🏆 1977 Portland Trail Blazers: The Trail Blazers fell behind 0-2 against the heavily favored Philadelphia 76ers. Led by Bill Walton, Portland responded by sweeping the next four games straight to close out the series 4-2.
🏆 2006 Miami Heat: The Heat lost Games 1 and 2 in Dallas against the Mavericks. Behind an all-time performance from Dwyane Wade, Miami rattled off four consecutive victories to capture the title 4-2.
🏆 2016 Cleveland Cavaliers: The Cavaliers lost the first two games to the 73-win Golden State Warriors (and eventually fell behind 1-3). LeBron James and Kyrie Irving led a historic comeback, winning three straight elimination games to take the series 4-3.
🏆 2021 Milwaukee Bucks: The Bucks dropped the first two games on the road against the Phoenix Suns. Giannis Antetokounmpo then led Milwaukee to four straight victories- capping it off with a 50-point performance in Game 6- to win the series 4-2.
@BillSimmons what if after the All-Star break, the top 10 teams are locked in as playoff teams and play for seeding. The rest compete for the top lottery odds with a separate lottery standings kept.
Do you know why we run the 40 yard dash? Not 10, not 100, but 40?
Before we had a draft, teams would just sign college all-Americans. The small school kids might be able to play, but how do we standardize how fast they are? Paul Brown estimated that on average, a punt travels from foot to a receiver’s hand about 40 yards in about 4.5 seconds. It’s a punt gunner drill. Gil Brandt took it from him, and when the first ever scouts went to find talent: that is what they were looking for. When we opened the combine in 1982, we made these kids run the 40 to standardize the test.
