Iraola wants pressure on the opponent all the time and won’t allow them access through rotations but this also has its downside. Frimpong can’t simply pass the player on and continue to be a RB hence why you effectively see roles reversed between Frimpong & Koumas. It looks like we’re going to see this a lot. It’s all about keeping the closest receiver covered rather than leaving the chance for the mistimed passing on of players. I guess he also likes it because the moment the ball goes out wide, there is instant pressure, and suddenly the touchline is another defender/trap because you’ve got instant pressure with the full back tracking the winger, RB covers inside and the ball side midfielder/forward covers the ball back in.

Iraola would argue with the RB so high it fits in with his front pressing principles and would mean Frimpong can get involved with high turnovers but with the winger so low? I’d prefer my winger to stay higher and receive in transition.

That channel behind Liverpool’s RB will be targeted (lol we’ve been here before haven’t we?) and it requires the right profiles. Look at Koumas’ body shape, he’s constantly scanning but because of his front on body shape he gets caught from the outside run and and if it wasn’t for a better ball, Monaco were in. Nothing against Koumas here btw, he works his socks off.

It’s a good job we’ve just signed Araujo because you need good channel defenders to cover the vacant spaces for the point above. I think Jacquet will do this job well too. There will be moments when the ball side CB needs to make that decision for everyone to shift across to cover space.

It will require patience because it’s all about communication, and jumping together. And that’s when Iraola will say I might have compromised positions to an extent but I made sure I covered access. It’s super aggressive and it’s all in.

It can still be aggressive with a few tweaks but it’s something to keep an eye on.
