One of my favourite choices in Nolan's The Odyssey 2026 is how the gods never appear in their true divine forms. Their presence is felt, not seen. Zeus speaks through thunder, Poseidon through relentles waves and unforgiving storms, the divine is always there just beyond human understanding

"Why am I here? Was there no other lord that offered for my hand?" Helena's question to Alicent carries a painful sense of resignation. She understands that her life has been shaped by decisions made for political purposes, but what makes it even more heartbreaking is knowing that there was another path. Rhaenyra herself had proposed a marriage between Helena and Jacaerys, an alliance that could have united the two branches of House Targaryen instead of turning them into enemies.

And perhaps the most tragic part is that Jacaerys was exactly the kind of husband Helena might have wanted. She describes him simply as "kind" — a small word, but incredibly meaningful coming from someone who has spent her life surrounded by political ambition, violence, and people who rarely see her as anything more than a means to an end. Jace was her brother, but he was also someone she knew to be gentle and compassionate.

Instead of allowing that possibility to exist, Alicent chose the political path that would bind Helena to Aegon. A marriage that served the interests of the Greens, but offered Helena little freedom or happiness. Her question becomes even more devastating when we remember that she could have been married to someone she considered kind, in an alliance that might have changed the entire course of the Dance of the Dragons. A different choice might have given Helaena not only a different husband, but an entirely different life.
