it is tied to your device for its entire lifetime.

Microsoft says it's for security. not advertising. not tracking.

we know this because it appeared in court documents from an FBI investigation.

not because Microsoft said it in a blog post. not in a privacy policy update. not in a Windows settings page. in an FBI court filing. that someone noticed.

Windows already has an advertising ID. you can find it and reset it in Settings. Microsoft built a whole toggle for it.

the GDID has no toggle. no settings page. no documentation for end users. it just exists.

Microsoft's position: the GDID is different from the advertising ID. it's for device security. it won't be used to track you across apps.

the advertising ID also wasn't supposed to track you.
