Some foods need to be avoided, others must be chewed extremely well, and hydration is always a priority because an ileostomy increases the risk of dehydration.
Most people never think about what happens after someone leaves the hospital with an ostomy.

Bag changes, preventing leaks, protecting his skin, staying hydrated, and always making sure we have extra supplies have become part of our normal.
We also have to be constantly aware of the risk of blockages. Foods don't digest the same way with an ileostomy.

Since the large intestine is bypassed, waste leaves the body through the stoma and is collected in a pouch like this one.
For Stalen, his ileostomy isn't a limitation-it's a lifeline. It has helped improve his health, but it also comes with daily challenges.
