.. some sort of a mutual understanding. What is the significance of the translator here as a sort of mediator? #GenderMECin

[Luisa @Luisabocco]

I liked the scene where the men are trying to recover the mare from the mine field. The translator changes his words slightly, but significantly enough to notice. This leads to a positive outcome, where both the officer and the villager have .. #GenderMECin

.. it would actually cause a spilt between them. This was a major theme in the film: trying to establish balance in a very fragile environment. #GenderMECin

I was interested by the Mukhdar's wife's choice of words when they are talking about inviting the Israeli officers to the wedding. She says: "try not to cause a split within the town and family." In her opinion, the issue wouldn't just anger people but.. #GenderMECin

"You have to choose: your bride or your patriotism!" Wedding in Galilee. #GenderMECin

So much time is dedicated to showing him, and yet it is unclear to the viewer what he is actually doing. #GenderMECin

Watching scenes such as one of the initial ones in which a man is shown working on a rooftop reminded me of the reference to the frequency of shots representing mundane/menial tasks made in Abu-Remaileh's article... #GenderMECin

I think the first shot in Divine Intervention (right before Santa is seen being chased through a field of cacti) is a great example of the "Open Image." #GenderMECin

[Luisa @Luisabocco]

I loved the cinematography in Divine Intervention. This shot is so visually appealing I wish someone would make it into a poster. #GenderMECin

it's body: the car. What might this disjunction represent? #GenderMECin

[Luisa @Luisabocco]

For some reason, the shot of a license plate sitting in the empty car resonated the idea of "stasis" with me. It seems like a pretty meaningless shot, but I got to thinking about how strange it is to see a license plate disconnected from... #GenderMECin

Still curious about the title of the film, Turtles Can Fly. I'm not sure I understand the meaning of it? What significance do the turtles hold? #GenderMECin

[Luisa @Luisabocco]

This is particularly interesting because Hengov is clairvoyant, so his physical inability to see anything here contrasts with his usual magic powers. #GenderMECin

[Luisa @Luisabocco]

After discovering his nephew dead, Hengov goes to look for his sister. The shot of him looking over the cliff is extremely interesting, because the valley he looks down on is covered in fog: meaning he cannot see anything... #GenderMECin

Is warfare and violence all he associates with the world on an international level? #GenderMECin

[Luisa @Luisabocco]

Satellite is fascinated by "the international," as shown through his affinity for speaking english and watching the news. But what is it about a necklace of bullets that he associates with being "international"? #GenderMECin

[Luisa @Luisabocco]

I love the passing of the UNO flag: "It will protect you." It clearly does not. #GenderMECin

for the whole family. I think this criticizes the importance placed on religion in daily life, showing how it cannot protect from everything

[Luisa @Luisabocco]

as a critique of religion? The father/husband in the 1st scene prays to God, but the outcome of the situation is still horrible #GenderMECin

[Luisa @Luisabocco]

It is followed by a scene of children learning to recite the Quran. Does the first scene serve to juxtapose the second, #GenderMECin
