Monty Williams opens up about the weight of being an NBA head coach and how quickly the job can pull you into survival mode.
“I was just working to stay in it…Some of it is survival, some of it is insecurity and if you’re not careful, it just becomes who you are.”
One of the strange things about coaching is that you can accomplish things you've dreamed about for years and still feel like you're barely hanging on.
Being in "survival mode" has a way of making it difficult to appreciate what you've built because you're constantly worried about what comes next.
I'm not saying everyone experiences it this way, but I do think one of the greatest risks for many coaches isn't losing the job.
It's realizing you've spent so much time building your career that you've lost touch with the person building it.

Season of growth, learning, and unforgettable moments. I’m incredibly grateful to the players, staff, and the organisation for welcoming me in and trusting me to be part of the journey. I’ve walked away not just a better coach, but a better person. 1/2
To my wife and daughters—your sacrifices, love and belief in me mean everything. You’ve held it down so I could chase this dream, and I carry that with me every single day. 2/3
