One year ago, this 1/4 acre was just an area of mown grass. I then took the topsoil off, formed some banks, made a wildlife pond, sowed the area with wildflowers & planted many native trees & shrubs. When I visited this week to carry out the first hay cut, it’s apparent that the area is now a thriving habitat for so much wildlife. Field voles & shrews inhabit the meadow, which Kestrels & Barn owls now use for hunting. Marsh Harriers have also been seen hunting along the margins.
A pair of Hares have moved into the longer grassy areas that are left uncut around the banks & margins.
Stock Doves are regular visitors to the pond for bathing/drinking, as have been Grey Wagtails, Sparrowhawks & Oystercatchers to name but a few.
The pond has been colonised by many species of insects, including a myriad of Dragonflies, Great diving beetles & Water-boatmen.
The above is in addition to the many species of Bees, Butterflies & Moths that are now benefitting from the already florally diverse wildflower meadow, and this is only very early stages.
Never let it be said that nature isn’t remarkably resilient, opportunistic & absolutely CAN bounce back, given a chance.
I will continue to manage this site (which takes very little maintenance) over the coming years and will report all my new findings.
If a single 1/4 acre plot can provide this much habitat for wildlife within the space of a year, imagine how much wildlife could benefit as a result of all of us doing our bit for nature in our own gardens/green spaces. Best bit is, you don’t even need 1/4 of an acre to achieve this 👍
Independent's equivalent betting directory seems to only have lasted 48 hours longer than Telegraph's. I can't find them in any top SERPs, and the rank trackers are showing early signs of losses.
Their partnership is with Gambling dot com Group and much more recent (under 12 months)
It'll be interesting to see whether any such partnerships survive the Site Reputation rollout.
Side note, I'm seeing cases of smaller affiliate sites rising up to fill the gaps, listing purely offshore casinos.
It feels like there is a bit of a void appearing, maybe an opportunity. Though I wouldn't be at all surprised to see operators increasing their dominance on historically affiliate-dominated keywords (best x etc)
Looks like Telegraph UK is an early loser in the Site Reputation Abuse enforcement
Their /betting subdirectory, which was one of the first media partnerships of its kind, seems to be hit heavily. Ranking tools are showing big drops.
Telegraph partnered with Better Collective in 2019, and went on to dominate UK betting & gaming SERPs for half a decade.
Many other more recent betting partnerships with mainstream media are still ranking as of now.
Always like to ask myself the question: if a new update dropped tomorrow, is there anything I would regret not having done sooner?
Answer is usually a yes…
The q makes for quite a helpful forcing function. Usually illuminates one or two key areas that haven’t had enough attention & need to be accelerated/forced over the line
interestingly top10 .com used to be a travel meta search engine that raised over $10m in funding, around a decade ago
it closed down in 2015, but while alive it accumulated tons of great links
the perfect domain/brand for NI, with the bonus of a powerful link profile to accelerate SEO traction
Outlook India’s advertorial section has 20k pages in Ahrefs, up from 3k a year ago
That’s prob $5m+ in direct sales, + rev from ads served against the vast traffic
Not bad, having others pay you to rank your site
Wonder if they’ll use this proof of concept + launch their own..
💷 Finance content site inspo
Impressive to see how much these guys grew with:
- genuinely engaging & readable content
- distinctive & clean UX
- consistency + patience (24 months)
Very premium keywords... And barely a link in sight.
@gamblinglamb One of our attempts at this - https://t.co/Kq88irGmHV We still need to do more to get users seeing and reading it. Of course this is just one simple approach. So much more can be done in this upper funnel space to complement latter funnel efforts
Seeing this dark pattern increasingly often on mobile - only ‘Essential’ cookies checked and ‘Save my preferences’ conveniently off-screen, while ‘Accept all’ gets prime position 🤨 bet it works a charm
NEVER FORGET Kalief Browder. A young black man who sat on Rikers Island for 3 YEARS without trial for a backpack he DIDN’T steal. He committed suicide after spending two yrs in solitary confinement. 730 days alone.
