The ACLU sued the state after it moved youth to the former death row unit at the notorious Angola prison. @theappeal reports the teens have faced abuse in their new facility, too.

A new study confirms Louisiana’s toxic air is linked to low-weight and pre-term births. https://t.co/vXNN5N1veM via @The19thNews#lalege#lagov#environment
Breaking: Children incarcerated in Louisiana’s Jackson Parish Jail have been forced to sleep on the floor, shot at with pepper balls, and imprisoned close to adults, according to documents filed today in federal court. https://t.co/gX99vitdB5
I spent most of 2023 writing about Louisiana's serious infant mortality crisis. Here's a slew of potential solutions that a state task force sent to #lalege: more nurses, better integration of nurse midwives, higher reimbursement rates, more home visits

So let me get this straight.
If you're a child living in poverty, Louisiana NOT participating in a federal program that is designed to provide food assistance to over 500,000 poor children over the summer helps fulfill the DCFS "mission" to create a "pathway to self-sufficiency."
But supporting and promoting a federal program designed to subsidize billions of dollars for carbon sequestration projects, that aren't economically viable without the federal dollars, (the exact opposite of self-sufficiency) is a better use of taxpayer dollars and is what's best for our economy long-term?
Child welfare - not good.
Corporate welfare - good.
Got it.

Louisiana, ranked next to last for child poverty, and without the child well-being infrastructure to address it, cannot afford to turn away assistance for hungry children. #lalege#lagov#louisiana

Knee replacements come with more instructions than newborns. New parents often go home in Louisiana with very little instruction, which doesn't help our high infant mortality rate. Here's how newborn home visits could make a big difference:

In 2021, Louisiana's Methodist Children's Homes and Methodist Foster Care provided more care for more children in more places than in any of our 120 years. Louisiana United Methodist Children and Family Services cares for Louisiana's children and families. #LouisianaChildren
Inflation’s grind against the purchasing power of Louisiana’s ancient Foster Care Board Rate (unchanged since the Blanco Administration) means it is way past time for our state’s #fostercare board rate to increase. #lalege@LouisianaDCFS https://t.co/1nZeVSC5bA
Because Louisiana's children need YOU, @MethodistFosterCare is “pre-recruiting” new #FosterCaregivers to train, certify and support for #LouisianaChildren after the COVID-19 crisis passes. Learn more at https://t.co/YU2IBUDQYp
The Louisiana Methodist Children's Homes and Methodist Foster Care are excited that we have been able to care for more #LouisianaChildren than before. We provided twice the care in 2019 over 2015. @LUMCFS works to meet the treatment needs of Louisiana's children and families.
When we use "well-being" to describe the condition of #LouisianaChildren relative to other states (and countries), we misuse "well-being" and risk deluding ourselves to the detriment of our children. The proper word is "distress". #LouisianaChildDistress https://t.co/6kAP7UhBWO
Phase I construction of Methodist Children’s Home of Southeast Louisiana nears completion with 1/4 mile of roadway into the 126-acre property. Phase II begins soon! During #next100years, this will be our regional center for 2,000,000 citizens who live in southeast Louisiana.
Many thanks to the counselors at @LUMCFS who've volunteered to help students, faculty, and staff impacted by the recent storm. They've been working with our Counseling Center as well!

"This morning I have considered the unfairly low board rate paid to Louisiana’s foster parents. Lousiana’s foster parents deserve a board rate that covers the full cost of caring for children."
