WHILE THE US BLOCKS ACCESS TO ITS OWN AI MODEL, CHINA JUST OPEN-SOURCED ONE THAT BEAT IT IN A BLIND TEST.

On DesignArena — where users blind-rate AI output — the free Chinese model GLM-5.2 from Zai just took first place, ahead of Anthropic's Fable 5.

Timing matters here. This came right as the US government moved to restrict access to Fable 5. China's response: open-source GLM-5.2 entirely, free to download and run on your own machine.

The specs back it up — 744 billion parameters, a 1-million-token context window. That's enough to analyze an entire codebase in one pass without losing context.

And the online version costs 10x less than Claude.

While the West locks technology down, China is doing the opposite. That's not a small detail — that's who ends up setting the pace of the global AI race.
