Getting to 10 income asap is crucial. It can be worth skipping flags to limit the amount of spaces the coin bags can drop, especially early on.
But there's also more RNG variance with the Merchants, so getting a good start can go a long way.

@dxwal7 Ah yes, that must be it. The game prevents the same locations to trigger multiple times for the same tile.
This was done to prevent certain exploits, but it's not documented as it only happens rarely.
