When I finally take a proper holiday, I suspect I will ruin it beautifully by carrying a geology book. I have reached that dangerous age when a man can no longer pass a road cutting without wondering what the exposed layers are confessing.
In the years remaining to me, I will certainly study geology. Geologists seem to experience an extra dimension of life. The rest of us see a hill; they see an argument among pressure, heat, water and time. We see mud after rain; they see minerals migrating, slopes negotiating and rivers quietly redrawing the land. Geologists know the Earth. They are grounded, 😇 properly earthed, without even requiring a copper rod.
I want to look at rocks and read the ages written in them; walk through valleys and map their mineralisation; watch storms and understand what they collect, carry and redistribute; follow water and discover what awakens its desire to flow; and stand before mountains, listening for the voice of God in the forces that lifted, fractured and folded them.
Civil engineering taught me to ask whether the ground can carry a structure. Geology now tempts me to ask what the ground was carrying long before we arrived with drawings, deadlines and the confidence that everything beneath us was merely waiting for concrete.
I want to become a geologist in my near future. Not to abandon engineering, but to deepen it. I want to see beyond foundations and excavations, beyond soil reports and bearing capacities. I want to read the Earth before prescribing what should be placed upon it.
Perhaps geologists enjoy life better because nothing is merely scenery to them. Every valley is evidence. Every river is a journey. Every stone is an archive. Every mountain is an old disturbance that time has turned into beauty.
That is how I want to encounter the world in the years ahead: grounded, curious, properly earthed, and alive to life in its fullest taste.

I have been seeing people throw around the word "disruptive marketing" and honestly most of the time it is just being misused. True disruption isn't about putting out low effort content and calling it bold.
Look at the UTB's open parks campaign. The idea itself is solid (waiving park fees for Ugandans to push domestic tourism). We all know most of us would rather spend our money in Kenya, Tanzania or the UAE because of misinformation now imagine if that money stays here, it makes sense for the economy and I believe that is the ultimate good goal for this campaign (I stand to be corrected though).
But the execution?, naaaahhh, the videos and the writeups the influencers are putting out lack any real substance, mpozi the hashtags. There is almost no education,no proper storytelling, nothing that can actually make someone want to pack a bag and go explore our own parks.
Even a comedian like Uncle Mo with his creativity could have put together something both funny and informative that actually teaches people about domestic tourism. Instead we are getting content that feels empty.
The choice of influencers and the quality of the videos being shared just don’t match the importance of the campaign. When the product is this weak, it doesn’t matter how “disruptive” you try to label it it still falls flat. Anyways, what do I know 🤷🏾🤷🏾
🚨 Bryan Mbeumo on his preparations for the new season:
“People see Champions League qualification and think everyone went on holiday happy. I didn’t. I kept replaying the season in my head. I started flying… the goals came quickly. Then somewhere along the way I started missing chances I’d normally score.
After the last game,, Bruno pulled me aside and said, ‘You know what’s annoying about you? You always arrive in the right positions. If you finished half the chances you get, you’d be right up there with the top scorers.’
Casemiro was standing next to us and just shook his head. He said, ‘Behind? Bruno, if he starts finishing properly he’ll finish above everyone.’ We were celebrating Champions League football at the end of the season…I was celebrating too, but in my head I was still missing chances from October.
That’s when I knew this summer wasn’t about getting fitter. It was about becoming more ruthless. Because if Bruno sees goals in me, and Casemiro thinks I’m leaving goals behind….Then I don’t have many excuses left.”
For those who think being abroad is the end goal, this is a reminder of what depression and the absence of a strong support system can look like. I hope her children are able to step in and support her.
