Ok, decided that the top shell should just be a wall to reduce complexity and add a ton of high-frequency attenuation; I found some cheap totally enclosed over-ear headphones claiming -34dB.

Not perfect, but I can hear my heart beat.

So @maiab inspired me to try AirPod pros *under* ANC headphones (Sony WH-XM4). She used construction ear protection, but I was thinking gun range active ear protection could be better. Any thoughts or experiences? out there?
