🇦🇿 A Muslim teacher in Azerbaijan has made an emotional appeal after being barred from teaching because she wears the hijab.

In a moving video, she recalls growing up in poverty, studying by lamplight until 2 or 3am and dreaming of going to university.

But she says she was forced to choose between her faith and education, waiting until the day after she finished school to put on the hijab.

Now, years later, she says she's facing the same dilemma as a teacher.

She insists that wearing the hijab must be a personal choice, opposing both forcing girls to wear it and forcing them to remove it.

The video comes amid growing controversy in predominantly Muslim Azerbaijan, where restrictions on religious clothing in schools have sparked protests by Muslim pupils and teachers.

Her message is simple: No girl should be denied an education because she chooses to wear the hijab.
